Offering up double doubles for holiday designated drivers

Planning ahead during the holiday season will net you a double double on top of a safe ride home.

The Coalition for Safer Alberta Roads has teamed up with the RCMP and Prairie Plaza Tim Hortons, with officers at local spot-check handing out $5 Tim Cards for people they deem “Holiday Heroes”.

“We’ve got work to do, and I think the best way to do that is try and have a conversation with people, and not talk at them,” says Coalition for Safer Alberta Roads Executive Director Debbie Hammond.

“We’ve had enough, right? We all know what it’s like to be pointing fingers, and I think people just wanted to be treated with respect, so let’s start where it makes sense and start with the people who are doing the right thing.”

Grande Prairie RCMP Superintendent Sean Curry says officers in his charge are thrilled to be able to give back to the community who are taking road safety as seriously as they do each and every day.

“It’s a season to enjoy having friends and family together, we just want to ensure that while you’re enjoying each other’s company that everyone makes it home safely.”

“It takes a little pre-planning [but] it will prevent tragedies for not only an individual or family but for the community.”

Of the $3,000 in gift cards purchased by the coalition, a third of the funds were put up by Raj and Simi Dhindsa, the owners of the Prairie Plaza Tim Horton’s location.
