$55k approved for new outdoor pickleball courts

Grande Prairie City Councillors gave the thumbs up on $55,000 in funding to help build new outdoor pickleball courts in the city.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis and can be played by people of all ages.

Councillor Dylan Bressey says they’ve have been talking about helping with a project like this for a number of years and is happy to see it coming to fruition.

“Rec projects that are supported by the community and are cheap for the city to invest in, and are easy for anyone to access, no matter their physical [or] financial abilities, that’s what I want to see us investing in.”

“I love that with virtually no equipment, anyone can show up and use this facility for free,” he adds.

Bressey says the big win for fans of the pastime are numerous, especially when it comes to finding space to play if and when other potential destinations, like the Eastlink Centre, are booked up.

“It means they’re going to have a place outdoors, and more importantly, they’re going to have a place to play whenever they want instead of having to book a gym, or arrange drop-in times.”

The proposed courts are slated to be installed at the site of the current tennis courts between Legion Field and the Leisure Centre.

The total estimated cost for the project sits around $100,000, with $20,000 of that coming from the Alberta Summer Games Legacy Fund and the rest being fund-raised by the club.
