Christmas in Grande Prairie: How to give back

With the holiday season quickly approaching, there are a number of ways to give back this year. Listed below are a few ways people can help out someone else or get help if they are in need.

Helping Hands of Grande Prairie– Nominations for families in need can be made online until December 1st. Anyone interested in sponsoring a family and providing them with toys and a Christmas dinner can message the group directly on Facebook page.

Grande Prairie Charity Dinner– The event will be held on Saturday, December 21st at the Church of Christ at 5:30 p.m. Tables are available to sponsorship for $200. They will also be collecting donations of toques, scarves, socks, toiletries, first aid kits and hand warmers on the 21st from 12-5 p.m. People looking to volunteer their time or attend the dinner can contact the organizer at [email protected]

Stocking Stuffers for Seniors– People can pick up a tag at London Drugs that has a wish list for a local senior. They then buy the items on the list and bring them to London Drugs by December 10th.

Operation Christmas Child– There’s still time to pack a shoebox full of toys and hygiene products for a child in another country. Boxes will need to be dropped off at the Grande Prairie Alliance Church between November 18th and 24th.

Odyssey House Adopt a Family Program– Each sponsor will be paired up with a family and then given some basic information about them. They then purchase items for the mother and children along with a grocery gift card so that the family can buy Christmas dinner. All items should be dropped off at Odyssey House by December 19th. Anyone interested in taking part can email [email protected].

Salvation Army– People can still apply for a Christmas hamper by appointment only until December 8th. Volunteers are also needed – call 780-538-2848 to ring some bells.

Peace Country Noize for Toyz– Toys can be dropped off at one of the locations with a drop off bin listed here until December 20th. The toys will then be distributed to organizations around the city to be handed out with Christmas hampers.

Wembley Firefighters Association- The association will be sponsoring two families in Wembley this year and providing them with gifts and a meal. Nominations can be sent to [email protected] until November 30th.

RGP Does Christmas- The group will be accepting nominations and donations for Christmas hampers by email until December 13th. The hampers will then be distributed to chosen families on December 22nd. Nominations and donations can be sent to [email protected].

18 Wheels of Christmas– Roseneau Transportation is hoping to fill a 53’ trailer to donate to community food banks. They will be accepting non-perishable food items, baby food/formula, diapers and new toys for boys and girls of all ages. Items can be dropped off in the Grande Prairie Superstore Parking lot on November 30th and December 1st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
