Guilty plea in Spirit River officer assault trial

The Spirit River man accused of assaulting an RCMP officer in August 2013 has plead guilty.

A new trial for 62 year old Leonard Berry was scheduled to start today, after his trial last February was declared a mistrial.

A female witness admitted she perjured herself during her testimony, but a stay was recently granted in the resulting case against Berry’s sister Margaret Berry, after not enough evidence was found to prove she had hired the youth to lie on the stand.

Leonard Berry was originally charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, after the officer was found strangled with his radio cord and left beaten in a ditch.

His sentencing is scheduled for tomorrow.
