UPDATE: As of 10:40 a.m. Highway 43 near Smoky Hill has reopened to traffic in all directions.
Drivers are being asked to avoid travel on Highway 43 near the Smoky Hill. Grande Prairie RCMP says there are significant traffic delays both east and westbound.
“Numerous tractor trailer units have been unable to make it up the Smoky Hill due to icy roads,” explains Constable Candace Hrdlicka.
No injuries have been reported. Highway maintenance crews and tow truck operators are helping to clear the area and other motorists are asked to stay clear.
A freezing rain warning is in effect for the region and roads in the area are reported to be very icy. School buses for all local school divisions were cancelled Friday.
“RCMP are asking motorists to slow down, and avoid travel unless necessary,” adds Hrdlicka.
