38 GPPSD students receive scholarships for getting involved in trades

Thirty-eight Grande Prairie high school students will get a little help with their post-secondary education. The Grande Prairie Public School Division students have been awarded scholarships for participating in the Registered Apprenticeship Program.

Superintendent of Schools Sandy McDonald says he is proud of the students.

“Students from the Bridge Network, Grande Prairie Composite High School and Charles Spencer High School who participate in the Registered Apprenticeship Program and the off-campus activities that we have represent us very well… and we’re thrilled to see so many students participating.”

Out of the 38 recipients, two go to the Bridge Network Outreach School, 17 go to Charles Spencer High School and 19 go to Grande Prairie Composite High School.

McDonald says each person was out in the community working in fields like agriculture, mechanics and power engineering. He says he has seen the number of participants in the program grow each year.

“We have more students interested in participating in off-campus trades related learning than we actually have places where they can go to work.”

The goal of RAP is to encourage more students to explore trades education as a path to good-paying jobs that will provide financial stability and help meet future labour market demands.

Each recipient will be honoured at an awards ceremony on November 15th.
