MP Warkentin to push relief for Peace country farmers facing faltering harvest

Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin says he plans to meet with Peace country farmers struggling with harvest due to unseasonably cold weather and heavy snowfall.

“We’re committed to working with our provincial counterparts and the Ministers of Agriculture to ensure farmers make it through this crisis,” says Warkentin.

This comes on the heels of both the County of Grande Prairie and Saddle Hills County declaring an agricultural disaster.

Officials say between 40 and 60 per cent of crops remain in fields across the region. It’s also being reported that regional farmers are trailing behind the average harvest process by about 25 per cent.

Warkentin says he plans to call on the government to make agriculture relief programs more responsive to farmers, as well as ask that the Liberal government immediately the Business Risk Management Review.

“The financial strain of this developing crisis could jeopardize the financial stability for many farm families and has the potential to impact the mental health of struggling farmers in our communities.”

“The federal government must act quickly to respond to the real struggles impacting farm families,” he adds.
