Target closing all Canadian stores, Grande Prairie included

Target has announced that the company will be halting all of its operations in Canada.

The U.S. retail chain will be closing all 133 of its locations in the country, including one here in Grande Prairie.

The store opened in 2013 in the Prairie Mall.

Morguard, the company that manages the mall, says it learned of the decision this morning, and calls it “a troubling development for Target and its Canadian employees.”

For now, it’s business as usual for the mall as they plan a smooth transition and look for a retailer to fill the space.

Target says it plans to set up a $70 million fund to make sure that all employees will get at least 16 week severance pay.
