Legion in need of volunteers for annual poppy campaign

Poppies are now available in Grande Prairie but sales may suffer due to a lack of volunteers.

Legion Branch #54 Poppy Chair Joanne Wood says they only have five volunteers signed up which could put a real strain on the number of boxes the legion can hand out and monitor.

“I’m really short on volunteers this year so it has been a bit of a struggle… The more [people] we can get out, the more poppy trays we can get out and the better it is for our veterans.”

All the money collected during the campaign will go into the Poppy Fund and will help local veterans pay for things like medications and transportation.

Wood says that despite helping out a good cause, it can be a big time commitment for volunteers that would see them checking on the boxes every other day.

“It’s basically just taking around the poppy trays to local businesses. They would also be required to check up on the poppy boxes and make sure they’re not full [of money and checking if] they need to be replenished with poppies.”

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can contact the legion at 780-532-3110.
