Sexsmith gets funding for sanitary lift station expansion

With the help of the provincial and federal governments, upgrades are coming for the Heritage Park Lift Station in the Town of Sexsmith.

Combined, they’re providing two-thirds of the nearly $132,000 project, which Aquatera CEO Bernd Manz says will increase storage and pumping capacity.

“The expansion of this, the upgrading of it, will allow us to accommodate continued growth in Sexsmith. It’s a project that’s needed right now, so we’re pleased with the funding so we’ll be able to proceed with it and be complete in the fall.”

Sexsmith Mayor Claude Legace says the town’s population has doubled over the last ten years, and is expected to grow from 2,500 to 3,000 in the next decade.

In addition to increasing capacity, equipment to monitor wastewater flows will also be purchased, which will help enhance wastewater services to businesses and households.

Peace River MP Chris Warkentin argues projects like this are essential to the growth of the region.

“”What we’re seeing is just massive growth in every one of our communities, and Sexsmith is no exception. We’ve continued to see people move into that community, and it’s important that this type of infrastructure is developed and made possible, so that development and those community members can be served.”

The funding also means a lower impact on ratepayers.
