Tabano Teen Drop In program latest beneficiary of 100+ Women Who Care

The Tabano Teen Drop-In program at the John Howard Society of Grande Prairie has received $7,200 courtesy of 100+ Women Who Care Grande Prairie.

The Tabano program is a social program for youth in the city who are struggling with the regular school system or looking to get a job. Program Coordinator Jacqueline Andrews says a gift like this shows those in the program the city as a whole is hoping for the best for their future.

“We use the community as a classroom so we try to teach them to try and be involved in the community, so when they see the community give back to them, it makes a really deep impression on them.”

Andrews says emotional regulation is one of the first skills the youth are taught, along with basic life skills, like hygiene, cooking, and the ability to manage themselves if they were on their own. She adds a lot of her pupils come in very unsettled and feel like the program is their last stop.

“A lot of these have hopes and dreams like to go back to school, get jobs and be able to move forward. We get to see them progress throughout the year, to be able to manage their behaviours, and not only that but to give back to their communities and to become leaders in our society.”

This is the second donation made by the members of 100+ Women Who Care have made in 2019, with Angel Flight the first charitable cause selected by members after nearly a year of inactivity.
