Local truck driver given two-year jail sentence for 2017 crash

A Grande Prairie truck driver has been sentenced to two years in jail for a 2017 crash in Fort McMurray that left one person dead and one injured. Tyrel Burton was sentenced on September 27th on charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm as well as a three-year licence suspension.

According to CBC News, the crown prosecutor says Burton was driving a tractor-trailer north on Highway 63 on February 11, 2017 when he approached the intersection at an “excessive rate of speed.” It says Burton failed to stop at a red light and rear-ended a line of vehicles.

He was originally charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm but plead guilty to the lesser charges of dangerous driving back in June.

A 65-year-old man was killed and a 16-year-old girl was injured in the crash.
