47 tonnes of food collected at 2019 Rotary Community Food Bank Drive

Volunteers with the 2019 Rotary Community Food Bank Drive collected 47 tonnes of food for The Salvation Army this year.

Despite not breaking the record of more than 50 tonnes collected last year, Drive Co-Chair Lori Pollock says they are still happy with that number.

“We’re thrilled; we’re always very grateful. We start with nothing so every part of it is a gift.”

Each year the drive sees volunteers go door to door collecting food donations to stock the shelves of The Salvation Army Foodbank.  Captain Peter Kim said previously that this event is key to making sure that no Grande Prairie family goes hungry.

“We require all the shelves to be filled so that we can actually provide the food hampers for Christmas and throughout the year. This food drive is our number one way of ensuring that we have food security for our families.”

Despite some uncertainty when it came to volunteer numbers leading up to the September 17th event, Pollock believes they ended up breaking a record when it came to helpers.

“We also think we had probably close to 1,000 volunteers out that night which is spectacular. As always the event can’t take place without the full support of our community and they definitely showed us that again and for that, we’re very, very grateful.

If there were houses missed on collection night or if people still have food or monetary donations they would like to make, items can be dropped off at any city fire hall, seven days a week, or at The Salvation Family Service Centre on 102 Street during the week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
