GP Slo-Pitch pushing for South Bear Creek facility completion

Officials with Grande Prairie Slo-Pitch are urging the city to help them finish off a wish list which they believe would transform the South Bear Creek diamond complex into a truly national sporting destination.

Sue Lambright with Grande Prairie Slo-Pitch says the work done on a number of the diamonds has been outstanding but believes they are still lacking some basic amenities when it comes to creating a space for the growing local league, as well as top tier tournaments

“We wanted to have washroom facilities/a concession building on the west side so if you needed to run two tournaments, a small tournament on diamonds 1,2 and 3 and a larger tournament on the other side you could. Right now, there are [only] port-a-potties on the west side.”

As recently as this summer, the city completed upgrades to the field area on Diamonds 1, 2 and 3 as part of the 2019 MD of Greenview Men’s & Master Men’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships, but Lambright hopes more can be done to keep the heavily populated slo-pitch leagues running smoothly, and says small changes could make all the difference and is willing to help the city wherever they can.

“We want to see parks and playgrounds on the east and west side for our kids to be safe and have fun too. We’d like to see lights on Diamond # 3 as it creates another diamond time.”

Members of the committee set forward a motion asking city administration to work with slo-pitch officials on the matters, and are also looking for an opportunity for community involvement in the efforts.
