Grimshaw teen honoured by provincial government

A Grimshaw teen is being honoured for helping to inspire and change the lives of others. 14-year-old Kyara Garnett is one of 16 young people who received the 2019 Great Kids Award from the Alberta government.

The grade nine student says getting nominated and then winning the award was completely unexpected.

“When I got nominated by my principal and my teachers I really appreciated it but I never thought I would actually win and then I did and it was pretty cool.”

Kyara volunteers both inside and outside school, helping with the sound and theatre system, volunteering with the mud bogs, and helping out at festivals. She says she just loves to get involved wherever she can.

“When anyone needs it I’m ready to help them whenever. It makes me feel better knowing that I’m making their life easier and making things better for them.”

“I just do it for the sake of doing it and then to have it recognized feels pretty great to just know that I have helped out and it has made a difference,” she adds.

The Great Kids Award has been presented to 304 children ages five to 18 since it was first handed out in 1999.
