Seniors, Housing Minister to explore adding more senior services, affordable housing in city

The Minister of Seniors and Housing says she is looking into what affordable housing and transportation options could be added for seniors in Grande Prairie. Josephine Pon was in the city on Monday to meet with people and tour some of the existing seniors’ facilities in the area.

“What I’m hearing when we had a round table this morning is that we need more services for seniors, the ageing population is quite serious in Grande Prairie, as well as affordable housing for seniors or for homeless.”

One service, in particular, Pon says she plans to look into is adding more seniors’ transportation in the city saying that the lack of it seems to be a problem across the province.

“This is an issue probably across Alberta. As people get older, their ability to go to different places is very limited. Some of the elderly public can’t even drive and can’t even take a bus at all so [having] a good transportation service available for seniors is very important.”

Grande Prairie is one of the minister’s 13 stops on her latest tour of northern Alberta communities. Pon will visit Clairmont on Monday afternoon before heading to Peace River the following day.
