Local walkers, runners gather in Muskoseepi Park for 2019 Terry Fox Run

Walkers and runners in Grande Prairie have joined together to keep Terry Fox’s dream alive. On Sunday, people gathered at Muskoseepi Park for the 2019 Terry Fox Run in hopes of hitting a $12,000 goal. Bronwyn Mcphail has participated in this event for around 10 years and is now trying to get her kids involved as well.

“We talked a bit about it this morning about the research of cancer and it’s an ongoing thing and we’re just continuing on Terry’s dream. For me it’s such an important thing for them to come out and see the community involvement and the impact that they can make too.”

This year marks the 39th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope, which saw Terry Fox jog roughly 42 kilometres a day for 143 days before his leg cancer spread to his lungs. During his marathon he was able to raise more than $27 million for cancer research.

Parkside Montessori Vice Principal Terra Shewchuk brought a group of students down to the walk and says it’s important to participate so that Fox’s legacy continues to reach the next generation.

“Terry was an amazing person and we have looked at his life and we are always looking for leaders for our kids and his marathon of hope was inspirational to us as adults and now we’re sharing that legacy with our kids.”

Students across the Peace Region will also be participating in school organized Terry Fox Runs until October. To date, people in Grande Prairie have raised $350,000 through the event.
