Police shooting victim had realistic looking replica gun

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has released few details so far in its investigation into the fatal shooting of a man by police in Grande Prairie early Friday morning.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., at least three officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Mac’s Convenience Store on 84th Avenue.

There was a confrontation, and the suspect was shot more than once and later died in hospital.

ASIRT Executive Director Sue Hughson says he was in possession of a realistic looking replica handgun.

“It actually looks like a real firearm; if you compare it to the firearms that our officers carry, it’s very similar. Whether it’s capable of firing anything or not, we will determine as our investigation continues.”

ASIRT has identified the victim and is notifying next of kin.

An investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing.
