Men’s, Master Men’s Fast Pitch Championships get underway at South Bear Creek Park

Sixteen of the best men’s fast pitch teams from across Canada are in Grande Prairie for the 2019 MD of Greenview Men’s and Master Men’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships. The five day tournament started on August 28th with seven games on the schedule including one played by the host Grande Prairie Pirates.

Organizing Committee Chair Paul Therrien says this tournament is a first for the area as one of this caliber has never taken place here before.

“The highest level of softball tournament that we’ve ever hosted has been a junior national tournament that we hosted here some time ago now. Recently about four years ago we hosted the Western Canadian Championships which would be for a division below this level of play.”

In the men’s division, there will be teams from places like Nova Scotia and Ontario and for the master’s division, for players over the age of 40, there will be teams from places like British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Therrien adds that this event is huge for the area when you take into account all of the players, family members and spectators flooding the city.

“We have players that represent all of the provinces from across the country, all of team Canada, the reserve squad [and] all of their families. People have [also] driven here from Saskatchewan, BC and all around to take part in this event because having the national tournament in western Canada is a big deal and being able to host it in Grande Prairie is huge for our organization.”

Tickets to the tournament can be purchased down at the park on game day. Schedules, results, and live streams can all be found here.
