More time needed for budget deliberations: Councillor McLean

The City of Grande Prairie is heading into 2015 without an approved capital budget, something one city councillor believes could have been avoided.

Councillor Kevin McLean wants to see the budget process changed for next year, adding another day or two to look the budgets over before sending them to council for approval.

“It seems like a push to send it to council, and once you send it to council, it becomes the one word: Operational Budget 2015 – 2018, yes or no? So then pretty well the debate is done; I wish some other councillors would have said no to this before sending it to council.”

He’d like to see another day or two the next week to take another look at what they’re spending and the resulting tax increases.

McLean notes as well that many councillors are new or only on their second term, like himself.

A Committee of the Whole meeting will be held in the first half of January to look at the capital budget once again.
