MD of Greenview to get province’s first commercial-scale geothermal facility

The MD of Greenview is on tap to get the province’s first commercial-scale geothermal facility.

On Friday, Greenview Council members announced the creation of the Greenview Geothermal Power Project which will include building a power plant in the Gold Creek area, south of Grande Prairie. Reeve Dale Smith says he’s excited to see the project move forward.

“I am pleased to see this ground-breaking, diverse energy source that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and assist our existing and expanding industries to meet their energy demands far into the future.”

Once the facility is built it is hoped it will generate five megawatts of electricity annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20,000 tonnes per year.

The project will be funded by a $25.4 million grant from Natural Resources Canada. This facility will also be the first of its kind in Canada. A timeline on construction has not been released yet.
