Fine, suspension laid after 2017 poaching incident near Valleyview

A Saskatchewan man has been fined and his hunting license suspended after pleading guilty to hunting during a closed season in Valleyview in 2017.

In October 2017, Alberta Fish & Wildlife asked for the public’s help in trying to gather information after a woodland caribou was found shot on private property near Valleyview. Nearly six months later, a tip from a resident lead them to Saskatchewan and a subsequent suspect.

In May of this year, with the help of Saskatchewan conservation officials, Matthew Chislett was interviewed and eventually confessed to shooting the animal out of season.

Chislett appeared in Valleyview provincial court and pleaded guilty to hunting during a closed season. He was fined $6,500 and given a five-year hunting licence suspension, which applies to both Alberta and Saskatchewan.
