Common Tansy clean up set for August 21st

People in the County of Grande Prairie and MD of Greenview will once again be hitting the banks of the Smoky River to remove an invasive plant.

For the fourth year, groups including the Grande Prairie River Rats, Seven Generations Energy, Canadian Natural Resources Limited and County and Alberta Agriculture and Forestry are stepping up to help remove an infestation of Common Tansy.

Greenview Agricultural Services first became aware of the problem during a routine inspection in 2015. Due to its location, the tansy needs to be removed by pulling it by hand or digging out the plants one by one and burning them to minimize the opportunity for the seeds to spread.

During this cleanup, Greenview officials hope to start moving control efforts up river targeting new infestations as well as going back to check on previous clean-up sites.

The clean-up will take place on August 21st but will be rescheduled if water levels or weather prevent safe river travel.
