Back to school safety topic of final Safety Summer Tuesdays

Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities staff want to make sure every student is safe as they head back to the classroom. Back to school safety will be the final topic of the group’s five-week Safety Summer Tuesdays program on August 20th.

Acting Executive Director Cindy Blinston says a number of topics will be covered including how to ride the bus safely.

“We have a bus from First Student coming so the kids can do a tour. They’ll talk about bus safety, where the safe zones and where the danger zones are as well as some of the rules for inside the bus. That’s always good especially for younger kids who are just starting out with bus riding for the school year.”

Enforcement officers will also be there to talk about crosswalk safety and RCMP members will be on hand to talk about strangers. Blinston says the event is all about injury prevention.

“We want them to leave with a refresher of the knowledge on how to navigate safely whether they’re walking all the way from home to school or whether they are going to ride their bike or take the bus; we just want to give them all the tools to stay safe.”

Pedal cars will also be available and children are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets to ride around safety city. The drop-in style event will run from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities and costs $2 per person.
