Peace Regional RCMP warn about email scam targeting big business

RCMP in the Peace Region are warning anyone in a big business with an accounts payable department that a new scam is making the rounds.

RCMP say they’ve recently received a report that a large organization had been mimicked through an email scam. The scam used a fake email address very closely resembling the large company. In this case, the address was one letter off, as @gtelus.net rather than @telus.net

Mounties say the scammer emailed a number of employees of the company stating that because of a compromised bank account the company was redirecting all invoice payments to a trust bank in Ontario to the tune of about $250,000.

Authorities are warning anyone in an accounts payable department to keep a very close eye on any emails which may seem out of the ordinary.

Anyone that thinks they may have received similar fraudulent emails is urged to contact the Peace Regional General Investigation Section.
