Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market members celebrating local food week

For the first time in its 40 year history, the Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market will be taking part in Alberta Local Food Week. Assistant Manager Chelsea Rach says they will be hosting a number of free activities this Saturday to celebrate.

“At 10 a.m. we’re having a veggie grow off and whoever wins that will get market bucks to spend at the market and then we’re having a pie bake-off and chilli cook-off; which all ingredients are supposed to be sourced locally as much as they can from the farmers market.”

The market currently has 65 permanent vendors and a number of part-time ones. Rach says participating in this week is all about encouraging people to come down and try something new.

“Our hope is to bring new faces down to the market so they can check out what we have; to support local food growers and the make it, bake its as well as some of our commercial vendors because they work hard all year ’round and it’s nice to get them some more exposure.”

The day will also include live music and a petting zoo for the kids. Registration is required for the pie-making contest and the chilli cook-off which can be done through email or on the market’s Facebook page. Events will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 17th at the big red barn downtown on 101 Avenue.
