County called in to remove beaver dams, possibly beavers near Sexsmith

The town of Sexsmith is looking at removing beaver dams in the area that may pose a flooding risk. It has called in members of the County’s Agriculture Department to help remove certain ones. Sexsmith CAO Rachel Wueschner said if they don’t remove the dams it can cause bigger problems down the line.

“They do clog up the waterways and it can cause problems obviously with infrastructure, roads things like that so we do have to manage them.”

This process may also involve relocating some of the beavers in the area. Wueschner adds that workers will be putting up signs showing that there are traps in the area. People are asked not to move, alter, or remove traps placed in the area.

“It’s not the most popular thing and so we’ve tried to do some signage and things like that to make people aware of what’s happening.”

The town is urging people to let Problem Wildlife Officers do their jobs and is asking that people not yell at or harass them while they are working.
