Grande Prairie Airport ranks first in Canada for on-time departures

The Grande Prairie Airport has been named the number one airport in Canada for on-time departures. A survey done by OAG Aviation Group Ltd. compared 125 airlines and 505 airports and also ranked the local travel hub 108th in the world in the same category.

Airport Commission CEO Brian Grant says it took a lot of people working together from baggage handlers to restaurant staff to make something like this happen.

“It’s been a pretty good boost to everybody on the site and certainly, the teamwork involved has been highlighted for everybody who works in the aviation industry here at the airport. It’s really a good feeling.”

Around nine flights to Calgary and four flights to Edmonton leave the airport each day. In 2018, 436,000 passengers passed through the airport. While Grant says he knows people have experienced delays there, on-time departures are about how much time the aircraft is on the ground from the time it arrives to the time it’s going to leave.

“A lot of times we get late flights that are delayed by other airports and they’re able to make up time here sometimes because the on-time departure rate here is high. We do have delays, we recognize that but it’s usually made up here as much as it can be.”

OAG Aviation is a world leader in aviation statistics and studies. It is based in the United Kingdom.
