85 per cent of 2019 Grande Prairie Forest Area fires caused by humans

Wildfire officials say of all the recorded blazes so far in the Grande Prairie Forest Area in 2019, over 85 per cent of them have been caused by humans.

32 of the 38 fires were not only caused by people but were preventable, according to Wildfire Public Information Officer Kelly Burke. The other six were caused by direct lightning strikes.

Officials also want to stress the importance of “soak it, stir it, soak it again” if you are looking to safely put out a campfire wherever it may be.

The good news for the area, however, is that heavy amounts of rain has saturated the area, and has kept the wildfire danger level at low.
