Court orders more payments to former hospital subcontractors

The Alberta Court of Queens Bench has ordered another round of court held funds be paid to a number of subcontractors linked to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

In a decision filed Thursday in Edmonton, Justice W.S. Schlosser ordered just under $9.6 million to Schendel Mechanical and four of its subcontractors, including Lee’s Sheet Metal of Grande Prairie. Schendel has since become insolvent.

Schlosser says former Minister of Infrastructure Sandra Jansen removed Graham Construction from the project on September 10th, 2018. Graham Construction suspended work on that day and four weeks later terminated the contracts of all subcontractors.

According to the decision, the former government also asked the contractor to come up with an estimation of how much it owed subcontractors. The number provided in October 2018 was $5.74 million. Subcontractors have since claimed more than $60 million in unpaid work.
