Delays expected as Highway 40 construction continues

Drivers will soon see some more delays on Highway 40 as crews continue to work on a 55 kilometre stretch from the Kakwa River to the Canfor intersection. As part of the two-year project, Alberta Transportation Regional Director Ryan Konowalyk says crews had been working off the road until now.

“It’s just not possible to finish that job without periodic lane closures. Right now we’re doing most of the work off the highway but once we actually start placing gravel and paving you will see some lane closures later this summer.”

The first phase of the project from the Wapiti River Bridge north into Grande Prairie was finished last year. The current phase will include the construction of 27 kilometres of passing lanes for all the heavy truck and industry use as well as a number of intersection improvements.

While Konowalyk says he knows it can be frustrating for drivers, he believes these improvements are needed.

“There’s going to be some short term pain for traffic but it will definitely be a long term gain. It’s a fairly significant investment right around the $50 million dollar mark. It’s a big investment but we’re confident it will significantly improve traffic moving up and down highway 40.”

During paving work, speed limits will be reduced to 80 kilometres per hour in most work zones, and to 50 kilometres per hour in areas where passing lanes and intersection upgrades are being constructed. The project is expected to be finished by July 11, 2020.
