Local armwrestling club brings home new hardware from Nationals

It was a big weekend for arm wrestlers from the Grande Prairie area. The Northern Twistmasters Armwrestling Club took home a number of medals at the 2019 Canadian National Armwrestling Championships in Edmonton over the weekend.

Club President Joe Fox won his second consecutive National Title with a win in the Men’s Master 176-pound, right arm category and placed third using his left arm. He also placed 3rd in Senior Mens right arm 176-pound class.

Maria Peterson was also back up at the podium in her fourth consecutive National appearance winning a gold medal in the senior women’s superheavyweight class.

Annie Beals won four gold medals in the Senior Women’s 60-kilogram and 70-kilogram categories and was given the Most Sportsman Like Award for the tournament.

The McCallum family made up of parents Sean and Jennifer and sons Logan and Garrett all competed together but it was Logan who came out on top. He won the 80-kilograms under 18 boys group with both arms. Jennifer pulled in the Master Women 70-kilogram class, earning 2nd and 3rd for the right and left arms respectively.

Member Gary McDonald also made it to the podium placing 3rd in the Senior Men 176 pound class. Spencer Curtiss won Silver in the boys under 18, 80-kilogram class and new-comer Mike Decoittis earned a Silver medal in the Senior Mens 100-kilogram class.

It was also a big weekend for Club founder and coach Allen Barker as well as Florence Obniwka-Blaise who were both inducted into the Canadian Armwrestling Hall of Fame.

Taylor Hanson- 30-kilogram under 13 category, 4th place.
Marc Guay- Men’s Open Unlimited classes for both right and left arm, 4th place. 
Chris Evans- 100 kg Men’s Open, 4th place.
Levi Evans- Under 18, 70 and 80-kilogram categories, four bronze medals for both arms.
The youth division was awarded the Torresan Brothers Memorial Award presented by the brother’s parents because of the group’s high number of younger participants.
