Local cricket association looking for female players

If you’ve ever wanted to try a sport like cricket, here’s your chance. The Grande Prairie Cricket Association is looking to recruit new players for a second and third women’s team.

Women’s cricket first started in the city last year and Head Coach Sandeep Singh says interest in the sport has grown since the beginning.

“There were only three or four women interested at that time but after we started with the three girls a few other girls watched them and they were interested as well and last year we ended up with 20 to 22 players.”

Men’s cricket has been played in Grande Prairie for a number of years and there are currently four or five teams playing throughout the city. Singh would someday like to do that with the women’s side.

For those interested, it’s free and he says everyone is welcome to come to their training night and no previous experience is necessary.

“As long as they can run we will train them and we will try to teach them what the rules and regulations are [and] how to play.”

The team trains every Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the cricket grounds at North Ridge Park 1 on 121 Avenue and 103 Street.
