Welding summer camp hoped to spark interest in future students

A summer camp aimed at getting youth interested in welding has come to Fairview. Starting on July 8th, the Mind Over Metal Camp hosted by Bird Construction will be held at Grande Prairie Regional College’s Fairview campus.

“These camps are specifically designed to provide youth with a hands-on introduction to welding and inspire them to pursue a career in welding. Students build confidence and have fun while being supervised by professionals in a safe environment,” says CWB Welding Foundation Executive Director Susan Crowley.

Welding safety, Gas Metal Arc Welding, introduction to weld symbols, and a brief overview of the impact welding has will be taught at the camp. Once the learning portion is complete, students will be able to put their skills to the test by creating their own projects like cowbells or a metal rose.

Crowley adds that Bird Construction built GPRC in 1973, so hosting this camp at the college is especially important to the organization.

The CWB Welding Foundation hosted its first welding camp in Edmonton in the summer of 2014 and has now hosted over 170 across Canada. The Fairview stop is one of 16 taking place in 2019. The camp will run for the next five days.
