Construction zone speeders the spotlight of July STEP initiative

City of Grande Prairie Bylaw Enforcement Officers will be keeping a very close eye on construction zones in July as part of their ongoing Selected Traffic Enforcement Program.

Sgt. Charlene Gallant says the message is clear, the safety of those working in construction zones will always come before getting somewhere in a hurry.

“It’s pretty serious and there is a reason for the construction zone being there, people walking around, it’s not just to make it uncomfortable, but it’s trying to keep our people on the street safe.”

Gallant says while this month will see enhanced enforcement, it is something bylaw officers often keep tabs on throughout the year.

“Our officers do set up in construction zones and very rarely if ever, don’t write a number of tickets in construction zones as far as people not slowing down for the designated construction zones that have been identified. People just don’t get the message to slow down in those zones and that’s evident by the number of tickets our officers will write in the construction zones when they’re set up.”

Fines are doubled for drivers if workers are active in a construction zone.
