Local couple who filed appeal for tax evasion charges to appear in court

After filing an appeal for tax evasion, a Grande Prairie couple will finally get their day in court. They are set to appear in the Court of Appeal in Edmonton to plead their case on June 18th.

Robert and Terry Steinkey plead guilty in 2015 to evading $486,000 in federal income taxes in 2007 and 2008. In 2017 they were sentenced to repay the full amount with interest, along with a fine of the same cost. They were also given conditional sentences of 22 and 18 months respectively.

According to the CBC, in a statement of claim filed in December 2016, the couple argues the provincial court did not have jurisdiction in their prosecution and they have already paid their debts through private indemnity bonds.

The Canada Revenue Agency says the couple followed the beliefs of the now-defunct Paradigm Education Group, which believed that people didn’t have to pay taxes. Its founder was also convicted of similar charges back in 2013.
