GPPSD Music in the Park event set for Thursday

Grande Prairie Public School District music students are preparing to perform for a local audience. The district will be hosting the third annual Music in the Park on June 13th.

The event will feature performances by bands, choirs, guitar classes and orchestras from across the district.

“You’ll have groups right from grade five… all the way up to high school. Each teacher is supposed to bring one ensemble. It’s really fun and it’s informal,” says Charles Spencer Music Teacher Lyndsey Mitchell.

Mitchell is expecting to see more than 100 participants including their parents, siblings and friends. She hopes the event will convince some of those younger students to take music when they get to high school.

“It might entice those kids who are maybe going into that age where they have to decide, “oh am I going to continue in high school or am I even going to start taking music in the school district at all.’ Hopefully it’s one of those things where they say, ‘oh I kinda want to do that.'”

The event will be held at Muskoseepi Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the event will be moved to the Charles Spencer High School gym.
