A number of organizations in Grande Prairie are hoping to ease parents’ minds when it comes to drugs and their children. Grande Prairie Crime Prevention, Alberta Health Services and the RCMP will be hosting a workshop on June 18th called “Adolescents and Drugs: What All Parents Should Know.”
Crime Prevention’s Cheryl George says a number of parents don’t know where to turn when it comes to the topic.
“Parents are feeling overwhelmed with the opioid crisis that’s happening in Grande Prairie, it’s not just the adults that it’s affecting it’s also affecting the youth. Parents are having a hard time dealing with that and they’re being overwhelmed and they needed something.”
The workshop will touch on topics including drugs and how they work and interact with alcohol, what the current drug trends are in Grande Prairie, and why some youth use and some don’t.
As of June 11th, 14 people have already registered for the workshop. George hopes the event will provide parents with the tools they need to talk to their children and start a conversation.
“[We want to] give them information to help them move forward and maybe take back a little bit of that power they feel like maybe they’ve lost… Just really good information that is practical they can use with their kids.”
George encourages parents to bring their questions and their notebooks. The event will be held at City on 99th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is free and people are asked to register on the event page.
