Peace River author honoured for personal essay

One Peace River woman’s personal story has won her an award. Trina Moyles has won the Jon Whyte Memorial Essay Award for her piece called Heard Memory. Moyles says the story is about her father and what she learned from him.

“The piece looks at some of the lessons my dad taught me of being on the land in the Boreal forest in northern Alberta, coming back to my roots and also about his important work on the conservation of Woodland Caribou in northern Alberta.”

The award is given out by the Writers’ Guild of Alberta to an outstanding unpublished essay by an Alberta author that is no longer than 3,000 words. Moyles was up against two other authors from Edmonton and Redwater.

Moyles says this particular piece took about a year to complete and originally started as a blog post. She says it was huge for her to win with such a personal essay.

“I think these personal pieces are always so meaningful. It’s the stories that are really deep in us, like these childhood stories that we carry with us and to be able to share that with an audience is really exciting.”

Moyles is no stranger to writing as her first book called Women who Dig came out last year. She is now planning to work on her second book which is a memoir on her time in northern Alberta.
