Grande Prairie Forest Area wildfire level high

The wildfire level in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is now high. In the past 24 hours, Alberta Wildfire says it has seen four fires start and has dealt with 25 total since the beginning of wildfire season on March 1st.

Officials say crews are currently working to extinguish wildfires sparked by lightning strikes on Thursday but that they are under control. Crews have been stationed throughout the area in order to watch for and fight any new fires.

With the weekend weather forecast calling for a return of hot, dry and windy conditions, the fire ban and off-highway vehicle restriction will remain in effect for the Forest Area.

Fire bans are also in place for both the City and County of Grande Prairie as well as the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley and the Village of Hythe.
