City looking at best options for youth emergency shelter expansion

The City is now working with the Youth Emergency Shelter Society to figure out what is the best option for expanding Sunrise House.

Use of the youth emergency shelter is expected to rise with Grande Prairie’s population, and Community Social Development Officer Donelda Laing says there just isn’t any room to grow in their current building.

“So this gives us an opportunity for the City to work with the Youth Emergency Shelter Society to say, ‘What kind of growth are you anticipating?’ ‘Where can you go and how can we support you in doing that?'”

Moving into the Young Offenders Centre, which the City purchased last spring, is a possibility, along with demolishing the current facility and rebuilding, or building new on City owned lands.

If considering the YOC, the idea is to have other operations in there at the same time, so an RFP for the building is being prepared for early 2015.

The hope is to have a new home by next spring.
