UPDATE: In anticipation of more evacuees, the reception centre at GPRC has extended its hours. It will now be open until 11 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. People are reminded to have government issued ID ready when checking in.
The number of evacuees registered in Grande Prairie has reached 230, with officials expecting the total to continue climbing.
The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership was activated on Monday, with medical services, accommodations and food provided for those who need it.
Information Officer Lesley Neilsen-Bjerke says GPREP officials prepped the best they could, and are anticipating another influx of people coming into the city.
“You can never be sure how many people you’re going to get, but we are pleased that we are able to support that many evacuees. We are still expecting more today and the next few days.”
Neilsen-Bjerke says they are currently not dealing with any capacity problems, but if need be, they will find space for those in need across the Grande Prairie region.
“When they come and register at the reception centre, GPREP staff there will access what their needs are and then place them accordingly to what hotel would best suit their needs.”
Officials in Peace River meanwhile are reporting roughly 250 people registered at the reception centre since opening 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
