City and County fire bans in effect starting Wednesday

UPDATE: The province has banned the use of off-road recreational vehicles in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Starting at 2 p.m. on May 22nd, people in both the City and County of Grande Prairie will not be allowed to have fires. Due to extremely dry and hot conditions, fire bans have been put in place for those two areas as well as the Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Wembley and the Village of Hythe.

The ban includes all open burning, fireworks, backyard and campground fire pits, burn barrels and incinerators, charcoal briquettes, turkey fryers, tiki torches and propane and natural gas fires and fire pits.

In the city, propane or natural gas stoves used for cooking are still allowed and in the county, the use of propane appliances like barbecues is also okay.

The county also says that ATV use is permitted, although it suggests holding off on riding for now due to the potential for accidental ignitions.

Breaking the fire ban could lead to a $5,000 fine and significant charges for the cost of any emergency response. The city says the ban will not be lifted until conditions improve both in the city limits and in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. A fire advisory is still in place for the Forest Area.
