City selling summer house fire property to Habitat for Humanity for $1

The City is looking at selling a piece of land where fire damaged a home this summer to Habitat for Humanity for the low price of one dollar.

Community Living Director Garry Roth says the organization approached them last year looking for a land donation, but nothing met their requirements.

“This past summer we had a house that was a social housing unit – that’s a house that’s a low income rental that would be rented through the Grande Spirit Foundation, but owned by the City. That particular house was involved in a fire and will have to be demolished and rebuilt.”

If the City chooses not to rebuild the property at 9305 67th Ave, they’ll be getting a $144,000 cheque from the insurance company, which will go towards future social housing.

Habitat for Humanity hopes to see 20 new units developed over the next five years.

They generally see a very quick turnaround thanks to donated time and money.
