Grain hauling minimums for rail companies will continue until March

Canadian National Rail and Canadian Pacific Rail will need to keep moving at least 325,000 tonnes of grain per week from now until the end of March.

The federal government has decided to maintain the grain movement minimums that were put in place earlier this year, to help with the massive back log of grain that farmers have been trying to get to port.

The railway companies can be fined up to $100,000 per violation if they fail to meet the minimums.

There is one exception, which is the two weeks around Christmas and New Years when the requirement drops to 200,000 tonnes per week.

From November 30 to December 20, and from February 22 to March 21 the minimum is 345,000 tonnes per week.

The last week of March that number jumps to 465,000 tonnes.
