City releases interactive construction tracking tool

A new online tool may help people keep track of current construction projects in the area. The City of Grande Prairie has launched a new interactive map called the GP Traffic Planner which will show projects currently underway and how long they will last.

Graphic Information Systems Manager Kent Bowman says this tool will replace the outdated system that had previously been in place for around 20 years.

“The previous one wasn’t what they would deem a modern browser tool which really limits what you’re able to do. With this one, because it’s more modern technology you can use this on smartphones [and] mobile devices of any kind really.”

Each project shown on the traffic planner lists details such as location, project owner, timeframe, pedestrian and traffic impact and transit route disruptions.

Bowman says the new app also allows people to choose how much they want to see within a five to 20-kilometre radius of their location.

“If you’re really only interested in what’s going to impact you in the immediate vicinity of where you’re located, [it gives you] the ability to just slide in and just kind of concentrate on where you are… That search radius really kind of drills it down a little closer and gives a better user experience.”

The planner can be found on the city’s website.
