The Town of Sexsmith is preparing for one of its biggest events of the year. It will host its 32nd annual Chautauqua Day on June 1st. Family and Community Support Services Coordinator Naomi Robinson says Chautauqua Day gives families and neighbours a chance to get together.
“I believe the word Chautauqua means a gathering spot so we just use that as our old time family fun fair.”
The event starts at 9 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Civic Centre followed by a parade down main street. The town has the rest of the day packed with food vendors, children’s activities, demonstrations and a market.
Robinson says what’s different about Chautauqua Day is that none of the money made goes to the town.
“Everything is run by volunteers who make money for their non-profit group… Chautauqua Day itself doesn’t make any money. All the money that we make that day goes back to our volunteers and the groups in our community.”
