Passenger code of conduct to be added on City buses

Taking transit is about to get a little safer for people in Grande Prairie. The city has approved a new transit bylaw that Transit Manager Steve Harvard says will put a rider code of conduct into place.

“It formally states what the rules and regulations are for the use of transit and the conduct of people who use transit.”

This will be the first of its kind for Grande Prairie as a transit bylaw didn’t exist before. The new document will include things like fines for being disruptive, defacing city property and skipping out on a fare.

It will also give Peace Officers the ability to remove patrons if they break any rules. A job Harvard says used to be left to RCMP officers.

“This now allows our own Peace Officers to be able to come onto the bus and deal with any issues that may come. It provides a little bit more assistance to both passengers and the transit operators in terms of the ability to get help if and when they should need it.”

Harvard hopes to get the new passenger code of conduct posted on every city transit bus within the next two months.
