Hospice Palliative Care Society, GPRC to provide end-of-life care education

Two local organizations are trying to make it easier to support people during their end-of-life care. The Grande Prairie Hospice Palliative Care Society and Grande Prairie Regional College have partnered up to provide better education to health care professionals and volunteers.

Executive Director Brenda Finch believes this partnership will help people navigate what to do when someone is given what she calls a life-limiting diagnosis.

“The end goal is to provide additional resources and education in the community so that everyone in the community when they encounter an end-of-life situation, they know where the resources are [and] they know who to contact.”

It is hoped that the partnership will shed light on what gaps are currently in the programs in place. Finch says that can be better achieved by working together.

“I think it’s important to leverage expertise and to work from the community perspective… in order to work together to further the benefits in the community. If we can work together, leverage resources and knowledge I think it just makes sense.”

While both groups are currently talking about how to best roll out the education plan, the first joint event, a caregiver workshop, will take place from May 29th to 31st at GPRC. Contact the Palliative Care Society at (780) 897-0066 to register.
