Ceremony planned to remember lives lost during homelessness

Those who lost their lives while experiencing homelessness in Grande Prairie will be remembered in a ceremony slated for May 30th.

The city in partnership with the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, and a number of other public groups plan to host a ceremony at the end of the month called the Healing Hearts Homeless Memorial.

Friendship Centre Cultural Navigator Natascha Okimaw says the event gives people the chance to honour those who may not have had any other family.

“These were real people, they meant something to somebody. Often times there is no memorial for some of the people that have passed while they were homeless.”

The event will feature an elder prayer, traditional drumming, and dancing as well as speakers. Okimaw says everyone is welcome to attend.

“It’s just about gathering together again and having that chance to remember those lost. It’s also an opportunity for those with lived experience to have a chance to talk.”

The memorial will take place from 11:30 to 1 p.m. at the train trestle in Muskoseepi Park.
